Research & background
Kathryn Hess Bellwald is a professor at EPFL, where she works in the Laboratory for Topology and Neuroscience. Her research spans algebraic topology and its applications in the life sciences and materials science.
Her work in pure mathematics includes homotopy theory, operads and algebraic K-theory. She also develops topological methods for studying neuronal shapes, network structure and neural activity. She received her PhD from MIT in 1989 and held positions in Stockholm, Nice and Toronto before joining EPFL.
