Mathesis
Norway's PhD school for the foundations of computational and pure mathematics
A national school for mathematical foundations.
Mathesis is a national PhD school for the foundations of computational mathematics. Financed by the research council of Norway and hosted by the Lie-Størmer Center it is run with partner universities across the country, it trains researchers who combine deep mathematical insight with computational practice. The name Mathesis comes from Greek μάθησις (mathēsis), meaning "learning" — signaling our mission of rigorous training across mathematical disciplines with a focus on computation.
Members
A national PhD network
Mathesis connects PhD students in mathematics across Norway. Members profit from access to courses You can join Mathesis directly to access courses, events, and our peer network across Norwegian universities.
Courses
Depth with ECTS structure
The Lie-Størmer Masterclass offers specialized courses in computational and pure mathematics, combining weekly online lectures with intensive in-person sessions in Bergen and Tromsø.
Community
Across institutions
Mathesis creates a national setting where doctoral candidates meet peers, supervisors, and visiting researchers beyond their home department.
Courses, cohorts, and research contact.
Mathesis combines structured PhD-level coursework with workshops, schools, and sustained contact across Norwegian mathematics. Students meet both the foundations and the people developing them.
