Lie–Størmer Day 2026: a celebration of mathematics
Marcus du Sautoy, school students and invited guests joined a full auditorium at UiT on 3 February to celebrate mathematics and the center’s next chapter.
On 3 February 2026, the Lie–Størmer Center welcomed researchers, school students and guests to UiT for a celebration of mathematics. Oxford mathematician Marcus du Sautoy spoke about symmetry to a full auditorium.
A subject that connects us
Research and Higher Education Minister Sigrun Aasland and France’s ambassador to Norway, Florence Robine, joined the gathering alongside representatives of UiT and the University of Bergen. Aasland highlighted mathematics’ role in technology, artificial intelligence and addressing shared challenges. Robine emphasised its international reach and the importance of encouraging more girls into mathematics and engineering.
Building the next chapter
The day also marked support for the center’s research and doctoral training. Tromsø Research Foundation’s account describes a NOK 25.5 million award through the Trond Mohn Research Foundation’s UiT initiative, in collaboration with Tromsø Research Foundation. The award was made in autumn 2025 and supports five years of research.
Mathesis has also received an eight-year Research Council of Norway award to strengthen doctoral education in mathematics across the country.
