Lie–Størmer Center receives NOK 25.5 million for mathematics research
The grant from Tromsø Research Foundation will support the center’s research and teaching activities, alongside its work to build international links.
The Lie–Størmer Center has been awarded NOK 25.5 million by Tromsø Research Foundation to develop its research and teaching.
The award is part of the foundation’s thematic initiatives programme. Three UiT projects received a combined NOK 55.8 million, according to the university.
Support for research and visiting mathematicians
Co-director Cordian Riener said the center wanted to combine research with international networks and opportunities for visiting mathematicians. He and fellow director Hans Munthe-Kaas have been building the programme over six years.
Riener told UiT that the funding would strengthen the research side of the center’s work. The aim is also to bring mathematical expertise into contact with applied research and industry.
A national research school
Separately, the center has received state-budget funding to establish Mathesis, a national research school in mathematics.
Together, the activities connect research, doctoral education and public engagement. The center also runs events for schools and audiences beyond universities.
