Film and discussion put gender inequality in science in focus
A Women in Mathematics Day event at Verdensteatret brought a documentary screening and a debate about barriers in academic life to Tromsø.
A screening of Picture a Scientist opened a discussion about gender inequality in research at Verdensteatret in Tromsø on 6 May 2024.
The Lie–Størmer Center and SFI Visual Intelligence organised the event to mark Women in Mathematics Day, which honours Fields Medal recipient Maryam Mirzakhani.
Experiences behind the debate
The documentary follows three women scientists and the obstacles they encountered in their careers. A panel then discussed discrimination, gender imbalance and ways to make academic environments more inclusive.
Participants were Antonella Munthe-Kaas from the University of Bergen, UiT researchers Melina Duarte and Sarah Martiny, and Arne O. Smalås, dean of UiT’s Faculty of Science and Technology.
Cordian Riener and Elisabeth Wetzer moderated the discussion.
